What personal data we collect
1. Information you send us through the contact form
If you use the Contact form, we receive the information you choose to type into it. This is designed to be minimal:
- the page or URL your report relates to;
- the claim you think is wrong;
- what you believe the correct fact is, and your source;
- an optional reply contact (for example an email address) — only if you choose to provide one so we can follow up.
Please do not include sensitive personal information in your message. The reply contact field is optional; if you leave it blank we simply cannot reply, but we will still review your message.
2. Cookie-based advertising and analytics identifiers
If, and only if, you select “Accept” in the cookie banner, our advertising partner may set cookies and similar identifiers in your browser. These can include an online identifier and information about your device and how the ad space is used, which the advertising partner processes to show and measure ads. No advertising or analytics identifiers are set before you consent, and you can withdraw consent at any time. See the Cookie Policy for the named third parties and categories.
3. Technical information handled by our host
Like any website, our hosting provider may process limited technical information (such as your IP address and basic request logs) to deliver pages securely and to protect the service. This is standard server operation and is not used by us to build profiles of visitors.
We do not run our own accounts, logins, profiling, or marketing email lists, and we do not knowingly collect data from children.
Why we use it and our lawful basis
| Data | Purpose | Lawful basis (UK GDPR) |
|---|---|---|
| Contact-form fields | To review and correct possible inaccuracies, and to reply if you gave a contact | Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — keeping study content accurate and responding to corrections, balanced against your interests |
| Advertising / analytics cookie identifiers | To show and measure side-column advertising that keeps the site free | Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)), given via the cookie banner; storing or reading these identifiers also relies on your consent under PECR |
| Strictly necessary functions (e.g. remembering your cookie choice) | To make the site work and to honour your consent decision | Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)); these are essential and are not used for advertising |
| Host technical logs | To deliver the site reliably and securely | Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — security and availability |
Who we share it with (recipients)
We do not sell your personal data. We use a small number of service providers who act as recipients of, or processors for, specific data:
| Recipient | Role | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Form backend (Web3Forms) | Receives and forwards contact-form submissions to our private inbox | What you type into the contact form, including any optional reply contact |
| Advertising network (Google AdSense) | Serves and measures the side-column ads after consent | Cookie/identifier and device data, only after you accept |
| Hosting provider (IONOS) | Hosts and delivers the website | Technical request data such as IP address and server logs |
These third parties operate under their own privacy terms. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, it is protected by a UK "adequacy" decision or by standard contractual clauses (the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, or the UK Addendum to the EU SCCs). The advertising partner is only engaged after you consent.
Contact-form submissions are handled on our behalf by Web3Forms (https://web3forms.com), which acts as a processor: it receives the message you submit and forwards it to our private inbox. Web3Forms processes the submission under its own published terms.
Your cookie-consent choice is stored as a small value in your own browser's localStorage. It does not leave your device, and you can clear or change it at any time using your browser's site-data controls or the "Change cookie choice" link in the footer; the state therefore remains under your control.
How long we keep it
| Data | Retention |
|---|---|
| Contact-form submissions | Kept only as long as needed to review and act on the correction, normally up to 12 months, then deleted |
| Optional reply contact | Deleted once the matter is closed or the reply has been sent, and in any event within 12 months |
| Cookie consent choice | Stored in your browser so we can honour it; you can clear it at any time and you will be asked again |
| Advertising/analytics identifiers | Controlled by the advertising partner under its own retention policy; see the Cookie Policy |
| Host technical logs | Kept for a short period by the host for security and operations, then rotated |
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR you have the right to:
- be informed about how your data is used (this notice);
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have data erased in certain circumstances;
- restrict or object to processing, including processing based on legitimate interests;
- data portability where applicable;
- withdraw consent at any time for anything based on consent (such as advertising cookies) — this does not affect processing carried out before withdrawal.
To exercise any of these, contact the controller using the details above, or send a message through the contact form marked as a privacy request. To withdraw cookie consent, use the “Change cookie choice” link in the footer of any page.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how your personal data has been handled, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK supervisory authority, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO): https://ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint/.
